Labour Day, 2023 (Pictures)

Home / Blog / Labour Day, 2023 (Pictures)

First, thank you very much to David, Suzanne, and Sara (members of the Local 4948 Social / Labour Day Committee) for their help in organizing the Labour Day Parade for 2023.

The parade went off without a hitch in the sweltering hot heat. The theme of the parade was “Year of the Union. Working Power Lifting Communities.”

About 125 Local 4948 members and their families/friends attended the parade sporting our union swag (t-shirts, fanny packs, and custom bucket hats), and it was a great show of support and solidarity from Library Workers and fellow union workers in the City of Toronto.

Alice (South Area Chair for Local 4948) represented our union in the “Colour Party” at the front of the parade contingent. Thank you to Alice for representing our union so well.

A special thanks goes to Stephen (Local 4948 member), who drove the “Big Blue” Bookmobile during this year’s parade. The Bookmobile was decorated with our Local 4948 logos and was followed by a truck donning a banner full of responses from Toronto residents to the question “What Makes a Great City”? Unsurprisingly, Our Public Library ranked among the most popular responses!

We were joined throughout the parade by thousands of library supporters. We gave out bubbles for kids and lanyards and Local 4948 RFID wallet cards by various people, including Marit Stiles (Leader of the Ontario NDP), MPP Dr. Jill Andrew (Toronto–St. Paul’s), Councillor Alejandra Bravo (Davenport), Councillor Gord Perks (Parkdale–High Park), and Mayor Olivia Chow.

Retired Local 4948 president Maureen O’Reilly also attended the parade as a panellist judge for the Toronto & York Region Labour Council.

Finally… to all the volunteers who helped give out water bottles, union swag, direct participants, etc. etc. etc.

Thank you!

We could not have had such a great day without your support.

These fantastic pictures from the parade were taken by Luisa (Local 4948 member), an avid parade participant… and a great photographer!!!

In Solidarity, and see you ALL at the parade next year!

Today is #EqualPayDay. Women still earn 32% less than men. The gap is even larger for Black women, Indigenous women, Arab women and women w disabilities.

We need strong public investment in community services to narrow the gap & increase women's economic liberation.
